the Torre Salsa Nature Reserve is a protected natural area of Sicily, established in 2000 by the Sicilian Region and entrusted to WWF Italy for management.
It is located in the municipality of Siculiana, in the province of Agrigento, and is so named because of the watchtower that once stood at the top of a small promontory.
The reserve extends over 750 hectares, across dunes and beaches of very fine golden sand, Mediterranean scrub, traditional crops and, in the sea, meadows of Posidonia oceanica.
Here too, the rock that plunges sheer into the sea has an exceptional whiteness, giving the waters cheerful colours ranging from light green to turquoise. Many species of fish inhabit its seabed, and for this reason the location is among the most popular with diving enthusiasts.
The fauna and flora that distinguish this stretch of coast form a very particular ecosystem: here live the peregrine falcon, the kestrel and the kite, the common ravens, wading birds, waders and gulls. The Torre Salsa reserve is also an important habitat for sea turtles: the Caretta caretta sea turtle, the most common in the Mediterranean Sea, lays its eggs on these beaches every summer.
Of particular ornithological interest is the area known as 'Pantano', a resting and nesting place for numerous species of aquatic birds.
