the Scala dei Turchi is a rocky cliff (falesia) rising sheer above the sea along the coast between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle, in the province of Agrigento. Over time it has become a tourist attraction both for the uniqueness of the cliff, white in colour and with peculiar shapes, and following the popularity gained from the novels featuring Inspector Montalbano written by the Porto Empedocle author Andrea Camilleri, in which these places are mentioned as the inspector's town, to be identified with Porto Empedocle.
The Scala is made of marl, a sedimentary rock of calcareous and clayey nature, with a characteristic pure white colour. This singular cliff rises between two fine-sand beaches, and to reach it you must walk along the shore and climb a slope resembling a great natural staircase of limestone. Once you reach the top, the landscape embraces the Agrigento coast as far as Capo Rossello.
The Scala dei Turchi has a wavy, irregular shape, with lines that are not harsh but soft and rounded. Its name comes from the past piracy raids by the Saracens, Arab peoples and, by convention, Turks; the Turkish pirates found shelter in this area, less exposed to the winds and offering a safer landing place.
