Monastery of Santo Spirito Agrigento

Monastery of Santo Spirito Agrigento - B&B Miravalle Agrigento

The Santo Spirito Monastery of Agrigento is just a 450-metre walk from the Bed and Breakfast MiraValle Agrigento.

The Santo Spirito Monastery is one of the largest monumental complexes in the city of Agrigento.

With its imposing size it dominates the eastern part of the hill, and consists of the Monastery and the church of Santo Spirito. It was built in 1299 at the behest of the noblewoman Marchisia Prefoglio.

The Monastery is entered through a corridor between the church and the Monastery, leading to a large cloister with a garden from which you can admire the striking western façade with its simple single-lancet windows and mullioned windows divided by slender columns, and an elegant Chiaramonte-style portal.

The structure of limestone and sandstone has created a wonderful two-tone effect, making the whole particularly striking.

From the central portal you enter the fourteenth-century chapel. A small staircase leads to the dormitories on the upper floor.

The abbey of Santo Spirito was called Bataranni, which in the Girgenti dialect means 'Great Abbey', precisely because of its great size.

Inside it houses the ethno-anthropological museum.
